Professor Paul Baines - Propaganda and Disinformation

Professor Baines will discuss how the use of these age-old military techniques has both remained the same and transformed over the last century, and how our adversaries, particularly Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran are using them to contest Western political hegemony in what they see as a post-democratic world. His thesis is that the West has grown complacent in countering authoritarian/‘strong man’ ideology whilst these countries see propaganda and disinformation as a legitimate and continuous means by which they can contest Western political competition.
The talk ends with a discussion of how the West might rethink our approach to counter-propaganda and disinformation

* Guest Speaker Paul Baines is Professor of Political Marketing and Head of Executive Education at the University of Leicester School of Business. He is also a Visiting Professor at Cranfield and Aston Universities. He recently published the SAGE Handbook of Propaganda (with Nicholas O’Shaughnessy and Nancy Snow, SAGE Publications, 2020). He is a frequent media commentator on political marketing and propaganda topics, has published around 27 books and over 100+ articles and book chapters. He has worked on strategic communication research projects for the MOD, FCO, Home Office, Other Government Departments, and the US Government.
