Chairman's Message

Welcome to the Naval and Military Club – otherwise known as the In and Out, a nickname that originated from the carriage gates at our old clubhouse at 94 Piccadilly and which we have carried forward to our magnificent clubhouse at No 4 St James's Square. We are universally known across clubland as the In and Out and proud of it too!

We have an Armed Forces heritage, but our membership is drawn not just from the armed services but increasingly from a wide range of other professions and backgrounds. We have long opened our door to women as full members and are finding the club is increasingly popular in that respect. We are actively seeking to increase the proportion of female members. Our membership encompasses a wide age range – our average age is 56 but the age of our Members ranges from 19 to 105. We have special rates designed to encourage young people setting out on their careers to join us and experience all a London Club has to offer. We have a thriving ‘away-team' of younger members who participate in the London Inter-Club events.

Whilst our surroundings and position in Mayfair are impressive, the clubhouse is very much a refuge for members whether seeking a peaceful oasis in central London to recuperate from the everyday rush, to socialise or to entertain friends, family, colleagues and clients. It is also ideal for those quiet business meetings knowing you can break away to our lovely private courtyard or drop into the informal Goat Bar for a drink and a bar snack (or a Curry Lunch on Fridays) or enjoy something more formal from the menu in the Coffee Room which is our main dining room. Or you can work off those extra pounds in our well-equipped gym and pool.

The unique geography of the building means that the front retains the traditional more formal Club style and customs. The back areas of the Club are more relaxed and informal, where dress down is the norm and there is easy access to the business facilities, gym and Goat Bar.

We have 52 bedrooms available for you to book – ranging from our much-loved Club Cabins to Club Doubles and even our palatial Canning Suite if you are pushing the boat out. All are en-suite and recently modernised. We have competitive rates with discounts at the weekend. We also have reciprocal arrangements with carefully selected clubs in the UK and internationally (130 in total) – so if you are travelling you have access to some very exclusive locations that are most definitely not your run-of-the-mill chain hotels.

There is a full social calendar ranging from our glittering but fun formal uniform and black-tie dinners celebrating Waterloo, Trafalgar and the annual Club Members' dinner to barbecues in the courtyard, the Summer Ball, Fireside Chats on a wide range of topics, Wine Buffs and Bridge Club to name but a few. We are also the ideal venue for you to host your own private events in one of many function spaces.

We do not stand on ceremony - we respect each other as fellow Club Members and enjoy everything that the environment, the outstanding and personal service and the good company has to offer. Nor do we stand still – we are constantly seeking to improve the offer to members while maintaining the ethos and standards that make us what we are. So perhaps you might find yourselves on one of our Committees if the inclination takes you – and maybe one of you reading this will one day be writing this introduction yourself. This could be your home-from-home in London if you choose to join us.
